1. Applicants for certification in West Virginia must have one year of public accounting experience in the four-year period immediately preceding his or her application.
2. Qualifying experience consists of any type of service or advice involving the use of accounting, attestation, compilation, management advisory, financial advisory, tax or consulting skills. In evaluating the experience of the applicant, the Board shall consider the complexity and diversity of the work performed, as well as any other factor the Board may consider relevant. The experience requirement may be satisfied by employment in private practice, government, industry, academia or public practice. An applicant's experience must be verified by the holder of an active West Virginia certificate, a West Virginia registered public accountant or a holder of an out-of-state certificate.
Licensure in West Virginia follows the fiscal year schedule, July 1 through June 30. The CPA Renewal Form is available May 1 through July 31.
The CPE calendar runs from January to December. A CPA must report CPE for the calendar year the license was held. You may log your CPE year round, using the Online Reporting Form, by entering courses and saving the report for later. Once you have completed your requirements for the year you may login and submit your report. The submission due date for reports is January 31.
You may login to the website and Print License/Authorization at any time. It is recommended that you save your current license as a PDF on your computer for future use. When the license is renewed from year to year, the dates are overwritten and the license cannot be recreated with past dates.
